Elsa Miller Foundation - Year in Review 2021

In its first year of operation, Elsa Miller Foundation engaged in 10 projects, in seven countries, partnering with these fine organizations: TIP Global Health and African Mission Healthcare in the USA, Society for Family Health and King Faisal Hospital Foundation in Rwanda, Green Umbrella Foundation in Cambodia and Karya in France.

Getting healthcare started earlier

We are addressing the challenge of expediting healthcare to rural areas in Rwanda. A digital system – designed by TIP Global Health team in Rwanda - focusing on the efficient collection of data especially for maternal healthcare, baby and child wellbeing, is in its initial phase. This will allow for pre-emptive care and early intervention that can save lives.

More Babies than Beds

Maternity ward was renovated, 50 new much needed beds and 200 locally-made sets of sheets were supplied to a regional hospital in Rwanda. Sewing machines and fabric were purchased and a tailor employed to make hospital gowns. This created a sustainable workshop to serve these ongoing needs. We worked with the Rwandan Society for Family Health NGO to make this happen.

Supporting Care

Through King Faisal Hospital Foundation, we provided for the specialized care for four babies in critical need.

Dr. Tom Catena, Sudan

Dr. Tom is the only doctor in the Nuba mountains providing care for 700.000 people (see film: The Heart of Nuba on YouTube)

Along with Africa Mission Healthcare we are helping fund the hospital Dr. Tom runs. His dream to have a training center to strengthen the healthcare system by educating physicians’ assistants and midwives from the local community becomes a reality in 2022 because of our five year commitment to help with funding.

Repurposing Buddhist Monastery into a Library

The Buddhist monks of the Khel Chey region in Cambodia sought to convert an existing pagoda into the community’s first public library.

We funded the project through the Green Umbrella Foundation with the Buddhist monks providing the labor. The transformation of the pagoda into a modern library serving 20,000 local residents was completed in 2021. The center provides access to computers, the internet, and a new collection of books.

Zambia Local Schools

We have fully equipped a Home Economics classroom with kitchen supplies and sewing machines. We provided a hand washing station because of the Covid crisis and a bar of soap for each of the 2,000 students to take home and share with their family the importance of hand washing in preventing disease.

Locally made desks have been added to the over-crowded classrooms so students no longer sit on the floor. Windows were repaired and new doors and locks provided where needed. A computer and printer were purchased along with a multitude of books and teaching supplies for the library. A project providing uniforms and underwear was fulfilled as well as scholarship help.

Nepal

Years ago, through Next Generation Nepal, Elsa became aware of the child trafficking issue particularly from the remote Humla region in the Himalayas. She closely followed several young people helping with their education. Now adults, we supported two projects they brought forth to help their villages in Humla. Solar panels bringing light for the first time to urgent medical supplies, all transported for days by porters and donkeys. The French NGO, Karya, has given us the channel to provide support.

Supporting the doctoral research in Tanzania

We participated with financial aid for a practicing pediatric nephrologist in Tanzania to further her knowledge through an advanced Harvard research course.

We thank our partners who have helped us make 2021 a productive year, and look forward to continuing our quest to help people where we can.
